home - games - about - forum news and stuff 07/10/18 i'm still alive. i have been working 10 hour days up to 6 days a week outside at the day job for the summer, so progress on the project is basically at a halt. the goal is to earn enough money to survive the winter without a full time day job, so i can focus on further development. i wish i had the fortitude to work 100 hour weeks, but sadly i do not. kingdoms of men is not dead; merely delayed. 05/30/18 haven't put a whole lot of work into the game these last couple weeks. still working on the world generation screen and logistics. shooting to allow players to generate up to 10,000km 2 (100km x 100km). call me ambitious but if i can keep the majority of regions under 1mb (that gives me a million bytes to work with per square kilometer) of disk space then people willing to allocate up to 10gb of their hard drive for a massive dynamic world would be able to do so. if that sounds like you, i hope you have a very strong processor. 05/16/18 did a lot of framework stuff for the game. got some world gen stuff worked out, and did a lot of setup for future work on things factions, relationships and animals. got a clear outline as to how world generation is gonna work too, so that'll be useful once i have all the elements i need to make a fleshed out world in place. next on the to do list is some gui additions and placeholder model making to do world generation testing. 05/08/18 i wrote a standalone editor for my game, so far the only thing it does is allow additional items to be created. an item default so far only requires 21 bytes of data, which in my mind is extremely efficient. i intend to upgrade the standalone editor in the future to the point where data can be localized to particular worlds and loaded with ease; it will be the main method for people to create mods, and each world you create could have it's own set of modifications. things like new items, new races, new animals, new objects of basically any kind could be added via the editor. besides that, i've also started writing biome code for regions, and weather stuff like rainfall, wind intensity and direction. might even have some sort of plate tectonics in order to determine viable mountain ranges. more on that later though. 04/26/18 i've been playing a bit too much one hour, one life lately. i think it's interesting that the solo developer, jason, had several similar ideas independently. it's a fun game, i'd recommend looking into it. on a development note, i've been doing some random code cleanup in different classes, but haven't worked on anything new in particular. the next thing i'm going to focus on is getting some game objects in, like trees and any other rendered objects in the world. 04/20/18 i've been designing a system that reads in-game crafting recipe data from a text file on load up. this design will allow easy expansion on items and crafting recipes, and potentially even allow players to add their own recipes, as long as they knew the correct numbers to put in the particular places. 04/13/18 been writing some new shaders for the engine, the goal is to be able to do very simple shading for lower end pc's, and have some nice high detail shadow cascades for computers with a little more power. graphics have never been the focus of this game, but it's a personal mission of mine to get some simple cascade shadows working, and perhaps even get some point light systems (like a fire or torches) to cast nice shadows too. 04/06/18 have had a hard time finding time to get any programming in lately, due to the whole "having to work a day job for a living" thing. just finished an important bit of code that makes sure things are at the correct height based off the height map data, that alone took a couple days to work all the bugs out of. next on the list is more core engine stuff. 03/12/18 i'm gonna do some work on the website. next on the list is a nice drawn out plan for the development cycle of my unnamed project. i think i have a name for it but nothing is in stone yet. but the plan will keep track of what's been accomplished, what needs to be done still and the priority of individual systems as they are added. the goal is to get a working rough pre alpha, then flush out major bugs, and add systems from there. it's gonna be fun. 02/26/18 multi-threading seems to be working really well. utilizing multiple cores is important to this project because of the grand scale it will eventually take. the biggest downside to dwarf fortress, for example, is that for all the calculations are done by a single thread on a single core in sequence, so once you get a large settlement with lots of characters and items to keep track of, the frame rate tanks and the game becomes less enjoyable to play. these problems will only become worse as more systems are added, and this is something we're gonna avoid from the start. 02/18/18 still working on the new engine. got the hud managed and figured out, and a lot of my base code is written and works. even got my multithreading support in early. definitely a long way to go, but it's actually getting somewhere, which is nice. 01/16/18 been working on making an in house engine for my game concept, started from scratch. so far it's coming along nicely. terms of service | privacy policy | copyright 2014-2018 asperity games
